Liberty Leading the People by Delacroix: A Symbolic Masterpiece and Our Vision

Introduction

Eugène Delacroix, a major figure in French Romantic painting, left a lasting mark on art history with his 1830 masterpiece, Liberty Leading the People. The painting depicts an allegorical figure of Liberty, often associated with Marianne, advancing among the insurgents of the July Revolution while raising the French tricolour.

This work inspired part of the visual identity of ERVERTE Paris. We chose, however, to give it a contemporary and peaceful interpretation.

A reinterpreted legacy

Liberty Leading the People reaches beyond its historical context. The work evokes liberty, collective commitment and the desire to change society. These symbolic dimensions informed our visual thinking.

Our interpretation does not seek to reproduce the painting exactly. It retains some of its strongest visual signs while adapting them to the identity and values we want to express today.

Why did we remove the rifle?

In our adaptation of Liberty Leading the People, we chose to remove the rifle held by the central figure. This shifts the message away from confrontation and toward peaceful transformation, creativity and collective responsibility.

The French tricolour remains an essential part of the composition. It reflects the brand’s French roots and the republican values with which Delacroix’s work is historically associated.

A reinterpreted Marianne

In this version, the figure retains her strength and movement but becomes more a symbol of progress and collective construction than a representation of confrontation. This contemporary reading better reflects how ERVERTE wants to express change: through creation, responsibility and durability.

Conclusion

By drawing inspiration from Liberty Leading the People, we pay tribute to a major work of French art history while translating it into our own visual language. The reference connects heritage, French identity and the contemporary vision of the brand.
